If it seems like we've been visiting far eastern Colorado repeated in previews for this year's outdoor season, that would be because track and field tends to be done very well in far eastern Colorado--despite the small sizes of the schools.

Yuma is one of those schools that historically does track and field well.

And, at least in recent years, there's nothing that Yuma has done better than pole vault. You'll see that if you run a virtual meet on returning athletes for 2A girls. Of the eight "placing" pole vaulters in that analysis, five belong to Yuma. Those five would be Monica Drury, Mallory Noble, Sadie Smith, Peighton Roth, and Ashley Stegman.

Clearly, there's an appeal to pole vaulting in Yuma. It's doubtful Yuma captures the 2A girls pole vault individual crown this spring, but if they can stand pat on the rankings and place all five, it's going to push them a ...
