Light rain fell on Pueblo from the early A.M. until around 11:00. Combine that with cloud cover for another hour and the circuits at Elmwood Golf Course were still sufficiently soaked as the 4A girls warmed up for the first of six regional races hosted in Pueblo.

Freshman Emily Lucero of Pueblo South flew off the line and led the race by at least five yards until one of her South teammates, a trio from Cheyenne Mountain, Aspen Heidekrueger of Woodland Park, and Katie Till of Canon City began to close at the mile. The crowd rolled through the first mile in 6:28.

Heidekrueger began to press as soon as the runners traded the path for the grass and quickly established a gap on the group. Seven places back Elli Enderle of Canon City was also moving up fast.

Enderle surged through the pavement and found herself in second behind Heidenkrueger as the runners returned to the path along the creek.
