Colorado (Non-Rankings) Weekend in Review

Piedra Vista Invitational

Piedra Vista HS Track  Farmington, NM

Mar 12, 2016

Down in Farmington, New Mexico, the San Juan Basin teams joined forces with several New Mexico programs to get their season underway. It's difficult to know what to make of 100, 200, 100/110H, LJ, and TJ results due to the absence of wind gauges, but there are still noteworthy items we can pick out of this meet.

Breann Hawman of Durango opened her season with a 33-6.5 heave of the shot put. Brian Mashak of Bayfield won the 100 in 11.64. We don't hang so much credence on the time, though, as the fact that he won the event against Durango and several larger New Mexico programs. That speaks well of his chances down the road. Josh Ramos of Montezuma-Cortez won the 400 in 53.74, followed a quarter-second later by Durango's David Moenning. Ro Paschal won the 1600 in a nice opening time of 4:40.57, while Durango's Benjamin Lachelt was just a hair over 10 minutes for second in the 3200. Maybe most noteworthy of all however, Montezuma-Cortez's Victor Perez won the shot put at 49-4. Right away, that establishes him as a state contender in that event.

Continental League Relays

One nice thing about the Continental League Relays results is that you can glean a lot more information from these results than your typical relays meet. Click on the link above and see what I mean.

There were so many good marks emerging out of this meet that I have to raise the threshold of reporting a little here so as not to get bogged down in the summary...

Some of the more exceptional girls marks include a 9:45 4x800 by ThunderRidge, and a 1:50.76 SMR8 by the same program. Here's hoping they can find those again when they can use them. Sierra Suazo was a solid 37-2.5 in the shot put. She was, perhaps, even better at 120-1 in the discus.

For the boys, Heritage wasted no time dropping below 3:30 in the 4x400. Mountain Vista laid down a 10:51 DMR. Koby Dudley of Castle View opened at 6-4 in the high jump, prompting a lot of people to start having trouble remembering a pretty good jumper they had last year. Davis Butte and Geoffrey Lord both reached 14-6 in the pole vault. Continuing the Highlands Ranch long jump tradition, David Cunningham went 21-1 (NWI). And, Jacob Condill took the discus as 148-3.

Ralston Valley Meet

Jeffco Stadium  Lakewood, CO
Mar 11, 2016

In case you somehow missed it, the headliner performance out of this one was the 1:55 800 by Henry Raymond. Obviously, we're suddenly expecting more big 800s from that young man. Almost lost in the shadow of that performance was Vincent Workman's 1:59. Raymond would come back later to win the 3200 in 9:47. We will be anxious to see what happens when a state-qualifying position is on the line.

Other boys highlights include Wesley Tedstrom of D'Evelyn at 10.94 in the 100. There was no wind reading on that one, but it does say something that he was .42 ahead of second. In the 100, that is a massive margin of victory. Weston Donati-Leach won the 400 in 51.14. Sid Bennett was 13-7 in the pole vault.

For the girls, Sarah Yocum made a clean sweep of the 100, 200, 100H, and 300H. Pretty clearly, Yocum is not easing into the season. Messages were sent. And we could even argue that the 400 might be her best event.... Luna Slater liked the idea of winning multiple events. She followed the lead of teammate Henry Raymond and won the 800 and 3200. Mia Moret claimed the pole vault at 10-6, while Alexis Laliberte won the shot put at 34-4.5. Better still, she won the discus at 129-3.

I have no results from the Palisade Relays from which to pull observations.
