TOP MOMENT OF THE MEET 3: Kallaway Wood Sweeps 100, 200, and Long Jump
If you were paying attention in indoor season, you may have seen this coming, but the difference between Kallaway Wood this year and Kallaway Wood last year staggers the imagination.
Wood got things off to an auspicious start with a wind-legal 12.61 win in the 100 meters. Better still, it was a massive PR.
Fresh off her domination of the 100, Wood found the sand in the Dutch Clark long jump pit (coarse as it is) to her liking. Her 17-6 (-0.2) winning mark tied her outdoor PR. Temporarily, at least, that has her more than a foot ahead of the 3A long jump field.
Next? The 4x100. Early indications were that this would be a very good relay for Elizabeth this spring. We got an idea of how good on Saturday.
Through 3A legs, Elizabeth was living up to all expectations. On Wood's anchor leg, the show went from spotlight on to lights out. The 51.67 won't stand for long as handoffs clean up and warmer weather releases legs to go their fastest, but it does occupy top run on the 3A ladder for the moment.
Arguably Wood's biggest challenge of the day lay ahead in the 200. Wood would face TCA's Claudia Valenzuela in the 200.
On this day, it wasn't much of a contest. Wood stepped on the gas around the turn and cruised to an easy win in 25.58, knocking down yet another PR along the way. Valenzuela had no answers.
Wood's heroics pushed Elizabeth to a strong second place finish on the girls side of the meet and sounded a stern warning about this team's potential to be a 3A title contender in another couple of months.
