A Mountain Vista Sweep At The Pat Patten Invite

15:15...

As dominating as the Mountain Vista girl's squad was, so was Connor Ohlson

The Dakota Ridge senior has clearly become comfortable being the alpha-personality on the course, because for the second consecutive week he attacked the field early.

Ohlson wasted little time establishing his dominance over the competition, which included a strong US No. 23 Mountain Vista squad.

Despite a hot early pace, Ohlson surged hard off the front after a mile soloed the rest of the race for the third consecutive win of his 2019 season.

While his style of choice for victory was impressive, what was more impressive was his time - his 15:15 tops our Pat Patten record list, as it was just three seconds faster than Cerake Geberkidane's 15:18 from 2013. Of additional note, before the 2019 edition of this race, Geberkidane owned the only sub 15:45 clocking.

While Ohlson was off rewriting the record books, the race behind him was heating up.

Henry Murphy broke up a tight team battle, as the Fairview junior had a big day of his own. Murphy ran a personal best of 15:29 to take the runner-up spot. Clearly he's on the rise, because the time was 13 seconds faster than his Liberty Bell performance, and he ran 16:57 here a year ago.

Unlike the girl's race that was dominated by Mountain Vista, the boy's race had everyone racing to their pencils and pads to tally finishers as they came in, because it was obvious that this one would be close.

And it was.

Jacob White gave Dakota Ridge an edge, as he was their second to finish, running 15:37. Like Murphy, George Washington's Charlie Welch found himself sandwiched between this hot team race, as he finished fourth in 15:43.

Mountain Vista's reply to the Ohlson and White's 1-3 finish came with Harrison Witt, who battled with Ohlson early and held on for a fifth place finish in 15:44. Teammate Davis Helmerich was hot on his heels in 15:44 as well, though Ben Morrin tilted Dakota Ridge back into the driver's seat with a 15:49 seventh-place finish.

Mountain Vista responded with Seth Rouse finishing eighth, and then rallied with Kyle BoeJack O'Sullivan and Jayden Nats finishing 11th, 13th, and 14th, putting six in front of Dakota Ridge's No. 4.

Benjamin Piegat and Ethan Straub were just strides back in 16th and 17th to close out Dakota Ridge's scoring, and then everyone went to their tally...

Mountain Vista 43, Dakota Ridge 44.

One point

Of additional note, while both squads averaged 15:56, Mountain Vista had a 29-second 1-5 split. Behind these two titans of Colorado cross country, Fairview took third with 91 points.

The top two ranked 2A schools went head to head as well, with Peyton finishing six points ahead of Lyons - scoring five runners. Though it's worth nothing that Isaac Roberts did not race.
