Colorado 5A State Cross Country Recap: Shockers Galore

From the opening mile it was clear that Riley Stewart was on a business trip.

The Cherry Creek senior raced on with one intention in mind: making it a three-peat.

And that she did.

Stewart clipped off miles right around 5:35 pace, shedding all competition by the time she took that right into Penrose.

The most-dominate 5A runner in recent history picked up her sixth state title, as she torched the field in the fastest time of the day - a 17:20 clocking - to claim the 5A state championship.

"It's an amazing feeling," she explained. "It's such a great way to end my high school career, coming through Norris-Penrose with people back in here. All the energy was back."

While most could see Stewart's victory coming before she even toed the starting line, the real question was who would take second.

The honors would go to Valor junior Brooke Wilson, who dipped under 18 on a course that rarely sees one sub-18 clocking in a race. Wilson survived the brutal early pace as a few clung to Stewart's coattails early, and Wilson was rewarded with a 17:47 runner-up finish.

The Arapahoe duo of Emily Lamontagne and Ava Mitchell came sprinting in 3-4, running 18:01 and 18:03.8, which was just ahead of Fort Collins' Ella Johns, and Douglas County's Aidyn Woodall, who ran 18:03.8, and 18:05.

And then all eyes turned to the team race, as there was US No. 3 and defending state champs Cherry Creek, US No. 6 Arapahoe, US No. 22 Mountain Vista, and US No. 23 Valor Christian in the mix.

By the time four runners had finished, Arapahoe had two in, Cherry Creek had one, and Valor had one. Valor snuck one more inside the top-10 to have two with Keeghan Edwards finishing eighth, though Arapahoe could not be denied.

Anna Bridges finished 11th, Ava Escorcia finished 16th, and closing the door was Karli Holmes, who finished 18th.

Arapahoe had their five in before anyone else had four. Add that their 1-5 split was an impressive 54-seconds.

After finishing second last year to Cherry Creek, Arapahoe once again turned the tables, and took the state title back, tallying a staggering 42 points. Cherry Creek took second with 60 points, while Valor was third with 97, and Mountain Vista was fourth with 155.

Add that for the third consecutive year, the top-two teams have been Arapahoe and Cherry Creek.
