Colorado Year In Review: Gavin Schurr Scorches The 200

Most of the top performances of 2021 came from May through December, though Gavin Schurr is the exception.

The Fairview senior was on fire as the calendar turned from 2020 to 2021, and all the way through June.

Schurr blazed a 20.84 200 indoors at the American Track League #4 on February 21 for a US No. 2. The time was just .14 off Jeremy Dodson's 20.70 outdoor Colorado state record.

Additionally, he ran 6.73 indoors for a US No. 4.

Outdoors he raced his signature event sparingly, and mostly out of Colorado. Regardless of the location, he ran fast.

Schurr won the 200 at the BYU Cougar Invitational on May 14, running a personal best of 20.52. While the time did clear Dodson's 20.70 Colorado record, it won't show in the CHSAA record books due to the fact that it was run in out of state (Utah.)

But, it was a US No. 4, and it did qualify him for the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials...

Schurr won the 100 at the NSAF USA Meet of Champions in a PR of 10.36.

And then Decision Time arrived...

Compete in your final Colorado State Track & Field Championships at Jeffco? Or head to Eugene, Ore. for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials?

With the meets spanning nearly the same day, Schurr accepted his ticket to the biggest show of his career in Oregon.

He was a high schooler competing against collegians and seasoned professionals -- a rarity in this sport.

But, proof that dreams do come true - with a lot of hard work.

Schurr went on to finish 21st in the prelims in 20.92, cracking 21 for the third time in 2021.
