Colorado 3A State Recap: Tight Races Across The Track


Devyn Lauer-Duarte came to Lakewood as the favorite in the sprints, and he proved why. 

The Platte Valley senior swept the 100 and the 200 in dominating fashion. Lauer-Durate won the 100 in 10.74, while Grayson Arnold was second in 10.92. Several hours later 

Lauer-Durat returned for the 200, and once again won the state title in over Arnold, running 21.31 to Arnold's 21.44 . 

Upwards into the mid-distance area and in to Brandon Bate territory...


The Liberty Commons senior ran away with the 400 state title, clocking a 48.01, and he did the same in the 800, running 1:56.25. Chandler Wilburn took second in the 800 in 1:57.80.

In the 1,600 Jackson Fagerlin achieved one of the more rare feats in boy's high school track and field - and that's winning a state title as a freshman. The Resurrection Christian freshman won in a wild kick, running a PR of 4:22.79. Wilburn was once again the runner-up, just a stride back in 4:23.00.

In the 3,200 Logan Gullett took a strategic approach, and sat within pack for five laps before dropping the hammer. The Eaton junior telescoped away for his first state title, running 9:38. The Classical Academy's Wilburn kicked hard to take second in 9:47, which was just ahead of Branden Davis' 9:49.


Marcus Mills came away with a big victory in the 110H. The Sierra junior ran 14.90 to claim the state title. Trey Ciccio took second in 15.19.

Several hours later Ciccio turned the tables, and ray away with the 300H state title, clocking 39.02.

In the 4x100 Holy Family ran away with the state title, clocking a 42.40. They also dominated the 4x200, running 1:27.86. Likewise, Liberty Common torched a 3:23.77 4x400 for the state title.

Meanwhile Frontier Academy made a race of the 4x800. They ran away from the competition to clock a 8:11. Liberty Common took second in 8:14, while Manitou Springs was two-seconds back in 8:16.

Returning to the topic of freshmen winning state: Jayden Nohr

The Berthoud freshman came away with one of the biggest shockers of the day - he won the long jump state title with a massive PR of 22-9. 

The triple jump was the Jordan Wenger show. The Classical Academy sophomore added several inches to his already impressive personal best, landing at a state-leading 47-2.5 for the state title. Temesgen Fanning and Zac Grable both landed at 44-10.25.

On the topic of PRs, Justin Bate added six-inches to his pole vault to win the event with a 13-6 clearance. 

The high jump saw two clear 6-5, including Zac Grable and Sonny Ciccarelli, while John Maynard was third with a 6-3 clearance.

In the discus Sam Johnson won the event by just over two-and-a-half feet, tossing 137-2. Clay Sandridge was second in 134-9.

Meanwhile the shot put saw a rarity - a tie. Zayne Stam and Philip Lawrence both tossed 46-1.25. Markem Buzzell was a close third in 45-11.50.

Lutheran took a tight team battle, tallying 83 points, while The Classical Academy was second with 75, and Liberty Common was third with 65.
