Monday Morning Recap: From Such Great Heights

Happy Monday!

It was another exciting week of indoor track and field in - and out - of Colorado!

Editor's Note: Before we get going - props to Tommy Reddinger for getting that awesome pole vault shot above!

Alright let's get into it, here are the highlights of the highlights...

Kicking off the week of competition was the Mines Indoor HS Meet Series #4 Thursday night.

A big highlight coming out of this one was Symone Adams, who leapt to a Colorado No. 1 of 18-6 in the long jump. Not only was that a state-leading mark, but that was a nicely sized personal best for the Cherokee Trail senior. Adams hasn't competed in the long jump outdoors, but if she does this spring she'll be in the mix for a podium spot at JeffCo come May.

Adams and Gabriella Cunningham took the 60 down to the line, with Cunningham taking the event by two-hundredths-of-a-second, running 7.75 50 Adams' 7.77. Cunningham also won the 60 hurdles in 8.64.

Another state-lead came from Jocelyn Millican in the 300. The Valor Christian senior torched a 42.93 - that's roughly around 57-second quarter-mile pace.

In the pole vault Sophie Pierce and Olivia Kosanovich cleared 11-8, while Kendall Morrison cleared 5-2 to win the high jump.

The boy's side of the competition saw three state-leading performances.

A big highlight came in the pole vault, where Cameron Thomas cleared 16-3 for a monstrous PR, and a Colorado No. 1 - that mark currently leads the state by just under two-feet.

Another state-lead came in the 300, where Ryan Hajek ran 38.00, while the third and final state-leading mark to come out of this meet was the longest event of the evening - the 300. Noah Schneiderman soloed a 9:50, showing some early strength.

Going way, way down in distance Nigel James ran 8.21 in the 60 hurdles for a CO No. 3. In the field Charlie Lafore won the shot put just off his state-leading mark, tossing 54-4, while Evan Atkin won the high jump with a CO No. 2 of 6-2 - that's just one-inch off Atkin's outdoor PR in the event.

Now, we'll head out of Colorado, where a sizable crew went to Lubbock, Tex. for the Texas Tech Under Armour High School Classic.

A week ago Tavon Underwood made waves with his 47.79 400 in Arkansas. Well, he did it again in Texas - the Mead senior torched a new PR, running 47.58 to win the event. Of additional note, his outdoor PR is 48.72, so he's way, way ahead of that already. Underwood also ran 21.72 PR in the 200.

Other highlights coming out of the meet was Antoni Smith, who cleared 6-2 in the high jump, and Joe Ciccio, who ran 6.95 in the 60, and 8.37 in the 60 hurdles.

For the girls Gabrielle Shepston dipped under 60-seconds in the 400, running 59.46, and she doubled up in distance running the 800 in 2:19.82

In the field Bradie Menegatti opened up her 2023 in the high jump with a 5-1 clearance.

In Utah Zander Cruzan opened his season at the BYU High School Indoor Invitational, where he ran 6.94 in the 60, and 22.35 in the 200.
