On the girls' side, Loveland High School has two impressive underclassmen that competed well this past weekend.
Brynn Torres, Loveland High School: Torres opened up her season with an incredible time of 11:20 in the 3200m at the Max Marr Invitational! Her time is #2 for Colorado in the rankings, just finishing behind her teammate in the race. Torres had a strong cross country season, where she ran a PR of 17:36 in the 5k and placed in the top 15 in the very competitive 5A division at the cross country state meet. Her time puts her at a great starting point in the event, and it will be exciting to see what else she can do in the other distance events this season!
Ava Wankelman, Loveland High School: In the pole vault, Wankelman opened up her season getting over 11-0, which places her in the top 15 in the whole nation for sophomores! The pole vault is a much more technical event, so her strong season opener of this height definitely shows some incredible potential for this underclassman. Considering Wankelman has not done this event ever, at least according to her MileSplit page, it makes her mark even more incredible!
For the boys' we have a pair of sophomores, who have already made great improvements from their rookie track season and are ready to stake a claim in this season.
Phoenix Tomsick, Ralston Valley High School: Tomsick opened up his season well in both the 100m and the 200m running times of 10.91 and a wind-aided 21.80 at the Ralston Valley Invite. Both of his times does place him near the top of the Colorado rankings, giving him a good start to the season. Comparing to his freshman season, Tomsick started off the year with times of 11.40 and 23.40, ending the season with PRs of a wind-aided 10.84 and 21.54. Tomsick is very close to both of those times to open up his 2026 season, making him a threat for a top podium finish at this year's state meet and only as a 10th grader!
Will Johns, Fort Collins High School: At the John Martin Early Bird Invite, Johns won the 800m in a strong season opening time of 1:58! He also has one of the best times of this weekend for all of Colorado though he is only a sophomore! Last season, Johns only ran two 800m races, finishing with a 2:04 as his personal best, so he is already quite a ways ahead of that mark. Furthermore, Johns ran two strong pre-season times of 4:28 in the 1600m and 9:32 in the 3200m. Both of those races are already personal best times for Johns from his freshman season. Even more so, Johns had a phenomenal cross country season, where he finished out the year running very close to sub-15 minutes in the 5k with a time of 15:07 and finished 21st overall at the 5A cross country state meet!
