2016 Centaurus Invitational: Broomfield Girls Roll, Norman Upends Green in Showdown

TOP MOMENT OF THE MEET (1)

It didn't take the Broomfield girls long to assert their dominance over the meet. With Madison Mooney newly added to the blue of Broomfield varsity, the Eagles set up shop toward the front of the field early. Truth be told, though, Broomfield encountered a little resistance at the front of the field. The same 3A Peak to Peak team that gave Mountain Vista fits at the Vista Nation meet last weekend occupied leading spaces here as well.

Ultimately, the main difference between Broomfield and Peak to Peak ended up being a matter of density. At the end of the race, Broomfield had placed six in the top 15. Peak to Peak's three was no match, though it did make for a very solid second, bumping traditional powerhouse Monarch to third.

Broomfield seemed to run their race as a tag-team affair. Katelyn Mitchem set out on an early lead in the race, but by the midway point it was Mooney holding down the lead. Eventually, Quinn McConnell and Anna Shults of Peak to Peak tired of the Broomfield presence at the front and set up front-running shop of their own. And, just as they did at Mountain Vista, they made the lead stick.

Meanwhile, Ivy Gonzales closed ranks a little with Mitchem and Mooney, a situation that would ultimately give Broomfield places 4, 5, and 7.Emily Mitchem, Vanessa Kort, and Laura Thompson rounded out Broomfield's top six.

It won't be easy to keep Broomfield from repeating as state champions.
