There is a very clear standard of where excellence in the boys 400 meters begins. It begins on the south side of 50 seconds. It's a much clearer line of delineation than most events can offer. Nice round numbers tend to have that sort of effect.

Brandon Singleton came within a quarter second of winning this event at state last spring with a time of 47.49. Singleton is the only returner among last year's top five at state. But, that's the end of the good news for the Cherokee Trail sprinter.
Last year's sixth-place finisher Zane Vanderberg is also back and already owns a 48.88 on Air Force's indoor track. That's not exactly the same as a 48.88 at Balch Field House, but it's still a very impressive indoor mark....
