The Last Big Weekend of Track and Field

The next stop on Madison Mooney's summer itinerary is Greensboro, North Carolina, for New Balance Nationals Outdoor. Photo by Alan Versaw.

It is by no means the last weekend of track and field for Colorado in 2015, but the weekends that follow will be decidedly smaller.

Three meets dot the weekend landscape for Colorado high school athletes. From Seattle, Brooks PR has beckoned, and eight of Colorado's best have answered the call. Both MileSplit and FloTrack will be streaming the event and the stream will be free as long as you have a registered username in the system.

From North Carolina, the traditional high school national championship meet of New Balance Nationals Outdoor rolls onto the track this weekend. Thus far, we've identified another eight Colorado athletes taking part in that meet.

It more or less goes without saying that you have to be a high level athlete to make the cut for NBNO.

Right here in Colorado, the multi events for the state USATF Junior Olympic meet are wrapping up today and the standard track and field events (less the hammer throw, which was contested last night in Boulder) run their course on Saturday and Sunday.

By far, the largest share of Colorado high school athletes in action this weekend will be at the state USATF Junior Olympic meet. All the Saturday/Sunday action takes place at Legacy Stadium in the far eastern reaches of Aurora. Colorado Track XC will be on hand for much of the Saturday action.

And, of course, joining the high schoolers at the Junior Olympic meet will be an enormous array of middle school and younger athletes.

We will be posting results, photos, and videos from these three meets as they become available. Be sure to keep checking in for fresh, new content.

For most of the state Junior Olympic contestants, this meet marks the end of their seasons. A reasonable number may continue into next week's Peaks to Plains Last Chance meet in Aurora. A few will continue on to the regional meet in El Paso, Texas, in another three weeks. And, a few of those will qualify for and continue on to nationals in Jacksonville, Florida, late in July bridging over into early August.

Other meets hosting Colorado high school athletes over the summer include the US Junior National Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 25 - 28, the World Youth Trials in Lisle, Illinois, on June 30 and July 1, somewhat less intense meets hosted more or less biweekly in Boulder on Thursday evenings, and the Rocky Mountain State Games in Colorado Springs on July 25.

And, check back next week for some detail on which Colorado athletes will be going to the US Junior National Outdoor and World Youth Trials meets.
