Look Left, Look Right

It's Friday. If you look left on the calendar, you see the meets that have already taken place this week. If you look right, you see a slightly more ambitious schedule of meets than what was held last weekend. And, the weather looks better for tomorrow than it was last Saturday. So, there is good reason to be hopeful for many more solid marks to be posted.

In meets that have already taken place this week, Rampart's boys sent a bit of a message at the District 11 Relays. The Rams won the 4 X 800, long jump, triple jump, and shot put relays. Traditionally strong on the track, the Rams may have a bit stronger presence in the field than in previous years.

Next up was Horizon's Early Bird Invitational. Holy Family was impressive in winning the girls title with 128 points--even more impressive when you note that their basketball team is still pushing the ball up and down the court. The Tigers could be a bit of a surprise contender in 3A if these results are any indicator of things to come. Persistent winds did mess with results some, but not enough to stop Michal Kenney (Arvada West) from posting a 5-3 effort, top in the state in 5A thus far this season.

Down the road a piece, five Pueblo schools brought their boys teams together for a meet at Dutch Clark Stadium. While it appears many of the top performers sat this one out (could have something to do with Pueblo South still being alive in 4A state basketball), Ken Harriman did get his season off to the usual start by winning the shot put and discus. South, a traditional power in the Steel City, walked away with the team title.

The biggest meet of the week to date was the City to City Challenge held in Greeley. For the uninitiated, the challenge might lie in naming the cities in question. Those cities would be Greeley and Loveland (with Berthoud thrown in for extra credit). Early in the meet, Thompson Valley's Laura Tremblay apparently wasn't feeling any ill effects of cool temperatures as she posted a 5:09.55 1600 time. Loveland, the only 5A team in the mix, went on to capture both team titles with depth the other teams present simply couldn't match--at least not at this point in the season. Loveland was not able to overhaul Thompson Valley in the girls 4 X 400 (above), however, as the Eagles posted a very nice 4:03.37 to beat Loveland by four seconds (photo by Sue Carter).

The Pueblo East Coach's Tribute was held today at Dutch Clark, but results are not yet in from that meet. It was, however, a good day to be holding a meet in a Banana Belt locale such as Pueblo.

In today's action far, far away, Jeremy Rankin (60 meters) and Tarique Hill (60 meter hurdles) both advanced by winning their preliminary heats at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships.

Coming up tomorrow are the Cherry Creek Relays, the Liberty Lancer Invitational, the Brush and Delta Invitationals, plus Round II of the Boulder Invitational (apparently there were things left to settle after Round I last Saturday). Results will be posted as they come in.
