Delta Regionals: A Rushing Wind Augments Challenge Of State Qualifying

3A Region 4 Boys

Colton Stice of Gunnison left nothing to chance. He took to the lead from the gun and never looked back until he crossed the finish line.

While the other races tended to string out quickly, there was still a tight chase pack behind Stice at the half-way point. One look at the pack and it was obvious the team race was being taken seriously with three each from Moffat County and Gunnison, joined by Delta's John Ames and Steamboat Springs' Sumner Cotton.

As the racers made their way around the lake, they gradually started to spread into mostly single file, dominated at the front by alternating black and blue singlets.  Only the green of Ames provided relief to the bruising color palette.

Leading the charge behind Stice, Moffat County's Carter Severson ran tough to earn the runner-up position.  Gunnison's Jon Wilkinson launched a sprint to the finish to stay in front of Ames who finished fourth.

Cowboy Alex Baca earned fifth place, followed by the Bulldog blue of Chris Carrouth and Wyatt Mortenson.  Cotton was next and then Gunnison's Brennan Stice and Garrett Butts rounded out the top ten and completed their score at 28, pulling off a mild upset over Moffat County.

Pagosa Springs and Olathe nabbed to final two team spots to advance to next week.
