Colorado Rankings: All Jokes Aside

Yonas Mogos dropped a sub 60 final 400 of the 3,200 for a state-leading 9:24 at the Lyons Invite Saturday.

All jokes aside, being April 1 and all, we've got some major reveals this week. And when I write "reveals," I'm talking reality tv curveballs where The Voice adds a third steal to trump the first two, or Days Of Our Lives style where Stefano comes back after dying for the 13th time, or Steve Harvey announcing Miss Colombia as the winner at the 2016 Miss Universe Pageant, if he was deliberately pulling a prank.

I digress.

This week didn't see a laundry list of rewrites in the rankings, but what we did see was some big, big performances that scream - not whisper - I'm The Real Deal!

Yasin Sado ran his first 800 of the outdoor season and came away with a personal best. The Denver West junior dropped a 1:55.83 for a new Colorado No. 1.

Perhaps the story within the story of Sado's state-leading mark was that he brought along Monarch junior Luke Johnson to a massive PR, and the No. 2 time in the state. Johnson ran 1:56.32.

Austin Vancil is clearly warming up into the season. The Dakota Ridge senior nabbed Colorado's first sub 4:20 1,600 of the season in a fiery kick over Durango's Aidan Fitzgerald. Vancil went 4:19.66 to Fitzgerald's 4:21.39 at the Mickey Dunn Invite in Grand Junction. An interesting tidbit on Fitzgerald is that a week earlier he ran a 4:18 PR at Chandler Rotary. That 4:21 effort back in Colorado has got to be a few seconds of a PR with an altitude conversion...

And as impressive as those races where, Yonas Mogos gave us a peek at his cards. The Gateway junior, who only started running last year, dropped a sub-60 quarter at the end of the 3,200 on his way to a state-leading 9:24 at Lyons.

I know it's April Fools and all, but I'm not joking.

Will we see a 50-foot triple jump this season? Allam Bushara might be able to answer that question for us. The Fort Collins senior opened his outdoor season with a state-leading 47-0.5, which was just five inches off his PR.

On the girl's side of the competition I may sound repetitive when I say: remember the name Sydney Holiday. The Broomfield transfer just dropped a state-leading 24.34 in the 200, and an 11.87 in the 100. Currently she's No. 2 in the 100 behind The Arria Minorby a tenth of a second.

We also caught our first glimpse of Remington Ross, who dropped the No. 3 time of in all-classifications, running 12.21.

Freshmen-phenom Riley Stewart opened her outdoor season with two massive PRs, and a state-leading 11:01.54 in the 3,200. Currently there are four girls within four seconds of cracking the 11-minute barrier, and two are freshmen.
