Golden's Rachel Goodrich ran away with the girl's 4A title.
Rachel Goodrich drifted lightly over the soggy grass.
Those dark red spikes with bright laces like little fireballs rolling over the terrain, clearly matching the red hues on her black Demons singlet. Tan arms swinging forward, always forward, clawing at the air like a prize-fighter.
The Golden senior was in full-on attack mode with a mile-and-a-half to go, even though she had D'Evelyn's Eliana Thompson lashing at her shadows with each stride.
Nevermind what anyone was doing behind her, Goodrich's thoughts and intentions were clearly in front of her.
She ran on like a runner who had simplified the process - just run hard, and the rest will take care of itself.
Each stride was an inch, then a foot, then a meter, then 10, and then... Goodrich was gone. She stormed into the third mile and never looked back, onwards without a negotiable shadow, onwards into herself.
The Golden senior was the runaway winner of the girl's 4A JeffCo title, running her fastest Colorado time to date - an 18:56 clocking.
Behind her was a furious dash to the finish for the runner-up spot.
In the wake of Goodrich's burning pace, Thompson was being tracked by Lily Mourer through the final mile. The Golden freshman launched into an attack of her own through the final mile, going into predator mode, and timed the surged just right - catching Thompson in the final straight.
Mourer kicked for a runner-up finish in 19:16 to give the Golden Girls a 1-2 finish, while Thompson held on for third in 19:18.
The team race, however, wouldn't roll into Golden's hands despite the 1-2 finish, as D'Evelyn would win this battle, tallying 42 points to Golden's 48. Standley Lake took third with 61 points.
Despite four inches of snow melting into the course, it was a course-record kind of day out at Stony Creek Golf Course for the 2019 edition of the JeffCo 4A/5A League Championships.
