Riley Stewart Storms To Victory At Centennial Mullen Invite

A year ago Peter Fox was a 16:31 Colorado 5ker. (He ran 15:54 at Team Regionals at lower elevations.)

Saturday morning he became a 16:02 Colorado 5ker.

The Grandview senior paced his way - away - to the first cross country victory of his his high school career. Fox sat back early before putting his stamp on the race, running away with a 21-second victory.

He hit the blue Mullen High track and had the final straightaway all to himself.

After leading early, Cherokee Trail's Caden Smith held on for a runner-up finish, crossing in 16:23, which was just ahead of Grandview's Jake Sheykhet, who finished third in 16:31. Michael Dudzic was the fourth and final runner to crack 17, running 16:58.

And then the team race was on.

Sophomore Evan Armstrong (#2001) finished fifth overall, and second for Cherokee Trail.

Grandview already had two inside the top-three, but Cherokee Trail returned with Evan Armstrong and Gavyn Welsh, who finished fifth and sixth. Their fourth runner - Reuben Holness finished 11th, before anyone else's third runner. They capped their scoring with Beck Gutjahr, who finished 23rd.

Cherokee Trail took a solid team victory, tallying 47 points, while Grandview took the runner-up spot with 59. Cherry Creek finished third with 80.
