Monday Morning Recap: PreSeason Finale Lived Up To The Hype


Who is ready for the 2021 outdoor track and field season?

While practice officially starts today, there was a pre-season-season to wrap up... The past weekend saw a handful of high quality meets to cap it off.

Here are the highlights of the highlights... 

The Let's Get REAL Championship lived up to the hype.

Kimora Northrup has shown that she'll be a force in the coming months. The Niwot sophomore (who owns Colorado No. 1s in the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles), won the 200 in 25.31 (A CO No. 3), and the 300 hurdles in 44.13. She also finished second in the 100 hurdles in 14.93, behind Casia Provencal who won the event in 14.88

Taylor James picked up two wins of her own - claiming the 400 in 57.00, which was just ahead of Skylar Hawk's 57.97. James also won the 1,600 in 5:09.

On the topic of leaping to new bests, Fabiola Belibi won the long jump in a CO No. 1 mark and personal best of 18-8. 

The triple jump was a hotly contested affair, with Melody Nwagwu taking the victory in 39-0. Kathryn Carroll leapt to a new PR of 37-11 to finish second in a CO No. 4

Meanwhile Giavonna Meeks maintained her reign on top of the throws, winning the discus in 138-6, and the shot put in 40-11.5. 

On the boy's side of the competition Gavin Schurr remained loose for the season ahead. The Fairview senior blitzed the competition in the 100 with a 10.59 clocking. He doubled back to win the 200 in 21.35.

In the 800 William Merrick once again inched into the top spot among the pre-season state rankings. Merrick torched the field, and his previous PR, running 1:52.54 - a PR  by over a second, and a US No. 15.

Paul Knight showed some pre-season strength in the 3,200. The Durango senior ran his first race in two months, winning the event in 9:33.

Meanwhile Carsen Bruns was the first to dip under 40 seconds in the 300 Hurdles in 2021. The Rampart junior won the event in 39.11, and the 110H in 14.94. 

Speaking of ready for the outdoor season, Avery Shunneson

Shunneson added over 15 feet to his PR in the discus, winning the event in CO No. 1 of 178-10. He also won the shot in 52-3. 

The Kokopelli Real Training Vista Nation Valor Winter Track Series 3 saw a handful of big performances as well. 

Maelynn Higgins capped the pre-season with a big PR in the 800, winning the event in 2:14.15 - that's a CO No. 3Stella Vieth was just three seconds back in 2:17. Meanwhile Allison Pippert took the 1,600 in a big PR of 5:14 - a 5-second victory.

On the boy's side of the competition Drew Costelow and Thomas Fry took the 800 down the line. Costelow was the victor here, running 1:57.36, which was just ahead of Fry's 1:57.65.

Bryce Reeburgh was the runaway winner the 1,600, running 4:23. Brennan Draper was just four seconds back in 4:27.

At the ATB Churchyard Meet #3 Jackson Wray and Garrett Searls went over 14-feet. Both cleared 14-1.75.
