There wasn't one dominate sprinter this past week. The 100, 200, and 400 saw three different state champions crowned.
Brayden Savage claimed the 100 state title in 10.81. Devyn Lauer was the only other sprinter to dip under 11 seconds, running 10.97.
Lauer didn't leave Lakewood without gold, however, he won a tight 200 race in 21.94. Braycen Buxman was a close second in 21.96. Savage took third in 22.15.
And on the topic of close races - the 400.
Drew Morton and Rulbe Alvarado were separated by one-hundredth of a second. Add that Sylas Chambers and Brandon Bate were within two-tenths of a second as well.
Morton took the 400 state title in 51.01, while Alvarado was agonizingly close in 51.02. Chambers was third in 51.12, and Bate was fourth in 51.18.
There was one champion in the distance events, and that was Joshua Medina.
Clearly, that runner-up finish at the 2020 state cross country championships was still fresh in his mind, because Medina came ready to roll.
The Alamosa senior won the the 800 in a PR of 1:54.78. Preston Fagerlin was a close-second in 1:55.75.
In the 1,600 and 3,200 it was the Medina and Alex Baca Show. Baca pressed the pace in both races, which stretched the field out along the track. In both races Medina was the last to kick, and first to finish.
Medina won the 1,600 in 4:20.47 to Baca's 4:24.29. And he won the 3,200 in 9:28.27 to Baca's 9:36.00. Henry Ilyasova was a close-third, finishing in 9:36.05.
Meanwhile, Aidan Graziano claimed the 100 Hurdles in 15.05. Trey Ciccio took the runner-up spot in 15.12.
In the 300H Logan Hafey cleared the field by a full second for a 39.26 victory.
Lutheran claimed the 4x100 state title, while University took the 4x200. Resurrection Christian won a tight battle over Frontier Academy for the 4x400 state title. Their victory here played a huge factor in the overall team competition.
Liberty Common and The Classical Academy took the 4x800 down to the line, with Liberty Common taking the title by three-hundredths of a second.
On the track Sonny Ciccarelli cleared the field, and 6-8 to win the high jump.
In the long jump Chrisly Kelly-Cannon had an absolutely monster of a jump to win the event in a 23-1.5 PR - his previous best was 21-0.
Kelly-Cannon also went on to finish second in the triple jump in 44-7.75. Tucker Myers won the event with a 45-2.75.
In the pole vault Noah Kelly won the event with a 14-0 clearance. Xander Burns finished second in 13-6.
Like the sprints, the throws had two different state champions crowned. Mitchell Anderson won the discus in 150-2, while Brody Welch won the shot put in 50-4.50.
In the overall team competition Resurrection Christian's 4x400 state title played the difference, as they tallied 73 points to The Classical Academy's 71.
Heading into the 4x400 Resurrection Christian needed to score four-or-more-points more than TCA to claim the title. Meaning, if they won the event, they need TCA to finish no-better than third. By winning the event, and TCA finishing sixth, Resurrection Christian claimed the title. Frontier Academy finished third with 53 points.
