Scottie Vines Soars Over 6-10 At Frank Woodburn Invitational

"I'm jumping high today..."

Scottie Vines was feeling it.

Moments earlier the DeBeque junior soared over his opening height of 6-0. Walking back to his coach he made the statement that would become reality within the hour.

Each time the bar rose several inches the 1A defending state champ easily cleared it on his first attempt like clockwork.

When the bar raised to 6-10 the crowd got into it - 6-10 was not only the meet record (owned by Vines from last year's performance here), it was also his personal best.

Vines wound up, using the entirety of the end-zone as a runway before trotting then sprinting towards the bar that stood six-feet, and 10-inches off the ground.

And then it that moment where the world spins at a slower pace Vines twist over the bar, once again easily clearing it.

6-10.

Yeah.

Some days you're just feeling it.

The crowd erupted in cheers as he came crashing back to earth.

Vines scooted off the mat and proclaimed he's going to seven-feet now, sending officials back to raise the bar and measure for accuracy.

As the story goes, the DeBeque junior wouldn't clear seven-feet on this day, but he came close on every attempt.

Seven-feet will have to wait for another day.

But he did cap his day with a state-leading mark, and a US No. 11

Vines' performance was the highlight of the Frank Woodburn Invitational, which played host to a slew of impressive performances and ideal Spring weather.

Among the notables included a wild kick-to-the-finish in the girl's 1,600 where Durango sophomore Sofia Voss ran a massive 11-second Colorado PR to win in 5:14 - that's a 4A No. 8

In the shot put Cedaredge's Elizabeth Brooks kept her unblemished win-streak alive by tossing 38-0.

Likewise Central (GJ)'s Daniel Baroumbaye added several feet to his state-leading mark in the discus, tossing 183-2 to win the event - that ranks him No. 15 in the US.

Miller Jones starred in several events, most notably the long jump, which he won with a leap of 22-6.5.

And then there's Shalom Trowbridge.

The mid-distance runner didn't even use blocks in the 400, but no matter, he still torched a 49.50 to win the event in a 4A No. 4.

Next week's 1,600 at Pomona (and the 800 at Dakota Ridge) is sure to be exciting!
