The story of the meet for the boys will be in the 110m hurdles mostly because of the #1 seed time, but also the chase for 2nd. First, Zamari Stivers of Overland High School enters the race with a time of 14.76. He ran this time at the Colorado state meet, where he finished 4th overall in the 5A division. He was only a sophomore then, making the result that much more impressive. Interestingly enough, Stivers has had a tough start to his junior season, running some of his slower times of his career,. However, Stivers is still the easy favorite as long as he can have a clean race.
The race for 2nd will be as exciting as ever as we have a rematch of the Tri-Peaks League final from last year. Joe Johnson of Woodland Park High School, finished 2nd a year ago, just out-leaning Colton Coster of Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy, who finished 3rd overall, who just out-leaned Jack Schoonover of The Vanguard School. Schoonover does have the fastest seed time of the three with a 16.02 and did perform the best at the state meet. However, these three already met this season at the CSU-Pueblo Early Bird and Coster was the one who came out victorious over both Johnson and Schoonover. It will be a tight battle for 2nd between these three and will be another early check on the season for who will take the crown at the Tri-Peaks League Championship set for April 26th.
In the 300m hurdles, Stivers is again the favorite, who has a PR of 40.66, which he had run at the state meet. He had a much better start to the season in this race, where he has run 41.00, but has only run this race once so far this season. His biggest challenger will be Jag Toupin of Elizabeth High School, who has run 42.07 this year, which is a huge improvement from the previous season. It seems Toupin has the momentum going into this race, but Stivers still has the experience, so he should be the favorite in the end.
Moving right along to the longer events, the 1600m is highlighted by a couple of Valor Christian athletes. Starting with Cory Gilbert, who comes in with a seed time of 4:31. He has yet to race this track season, so his seed time is from a year ago, however, he did run 15:33 at the Southwest Nike Regional meet, showing some definite potential to dip under 4:30.
His biggest competition will be his own teammate in Lucas Santos who comes in with a time of 4:35. He has already been pretty consistent this season, running 4:36 in the last meet and 4:35 a few weeks ago. Considering his momentum, Santos may be able to defeat Gilbert, considering Gilbert has yet to race this season. Nevertheless, it should be a fairly close race against these two.
Over in the field events, the long jump looks like it will produce an exciting and close competition. First, Chase Pittman of Denver North High School comes in with a mark of 21-4.5. Though it has been a few meets since Pittman has jumped over 21 feet, he has jumped 20-11.5 so far this season, which is extremely close to getting over the 20-foot barrier.
The challenger to Pittman will be Aidan Bates of Woodland Park, where these two only have a one inch difference in personal bests. Similar to Pittman, Bates has not been over 20 feet in a few months, but has jumped 20-1 so far this season. He has only long jumped once, so maybe after having a few more weeks of practice, Bates will challenge Pittman for the victory.
Finally, the shot put also looks to be a close competition between a bigger division and a smaller division. Austin Blattner of Ralston Valley High School has the furthest throw of 47-2. He has been a few feet off of his PR so far this season, throwing 45-00. However, sometimes meets like these can bring out the best in athletes, so Blattner has the potential to pull out the win.
However, in terms of momentum, Matthew Betsayad of Banning Lewis Preparatory Academy might have the upperhand to pull out the win. Betsayad just threw 46-5 at the most recent meet, improving from 40-1 he threw at the first meet of the season. Clearly, this stallion has the most potential purely on his rate of improvement and could take home the victory if he can pull out another PR.
