The rain did not stop in Eugene on Day 3 of the Nike Outdoor National Championships and for many parts of the day, it rained incredibly hard. However, that did not stop Colorado from performing well against the rest of the nation!
Starting with the field events on the boys' side, the high jump was dominated by Colorado. In the Emerging Elite division, Troy Sowards placed 1st overall with a jump of 6-6.25, finishing ahead of Brandon Kolb Jr. who tied for 2nd, clearing 6-4.25. Though these jumps were below their seasons' bests, it was raining incredibly hard and the apron was covered in water. When conditions are tough, one can only look at the placement, and these two boys represented their state well.
Just like the other days, the throws events were very strong for Colorado. In the Emerging Elite category of the hammer throw, Spencer Marfut threw an impressive mark of 178-3 which put him in 4th place overall. Jarrius Ward got a second chance in the discus throwing in the championship division, where he faired much better. His throw of 190-11 earned him 6th place overall.
On the track, the 3k Championship was incredibly competitive, but Oliver Horton was able to sneak into the last All-American position, running a time of 8:13 to earn 8th place. Though only a couple seconds separated them, Ryder Keeton ended up in 12th place overall with a time of 8:15 with Aiden Le Roux finishing 12th with a time of 8:17. In the Championship division of the 800m, Rocco Culpepper may not have been in the fast heat, but he held his own by winning his heat and finishing 13th overall with a new PR of 1:51. Finally, Mountain Vista qualified for the 4x100m Championship finals with a time of 42.72, earning the last qualifying spot.
On the girls' side, Dakota Ridge also earned the last qualifying spot for the 4x100m Emerging Elite Final, running a time of 50.95. In the Emerging Elite category of the 800m, Madeline Clark ran to an impressive time of 2:14, which placed her 6th overall in a very competitive field. Though not quite a personal best, she was only about half a second from her PR, making it a very good run for her.
Both the Emerging Elite and the Championship division saw girls from Colorado landing in the top 8. Starting with the Emerging Elite, McKenna Groen finished 3rd overall with a time of 9:52. In the Championship section, Emry Schwalm performed well once again on the national stage, running 9:37 to place 8th. Chamorra Cooper was just a few seconds behind, running 9:40 to finish 9th.
In the field events, throws continued to impress, starting with Jade West's performance in shot put. She placed 7th overall with a throw of 46-5.25. Though we are used to seeing Brooke Schmidt dominate the discus ring, she is also strong in the hammer throw, finishing 5th overall in the Emerging Elite section, throwing a mark of 136-2. Lastly, Evelyn McClellan also battled the rain in the Emerging Elite high jump, where she still got over 5-1.25, placing 6th overall.
