Ok... so Alan's health insurance article got me thinking... since we are not going to start ranking Masters athletes... I started wondering who the fastest XC coach in Colorado would be. 1....2.....3... NOT IT! If I had to bet my mortgage on someone it would have to be Coach Ponce from Lincoln. Last year he ran a 17:25 on the Addenbrooke course which features four water crossings. By the time the citizen's race went off the grass around the crossings had been reduced to a muddy sloppy mess. Coach Ponce's time is a full 25 seconds faster than Sam Yeager from Faith Christian who won the race on the boys side that day. I will not mention my time... but I did do a sweet cannonball into the water pit at the first crossing drenching half my team and at very least surprising the gentleman behind me. Style points should count for something, right? I really respect coaches who stay in shape at least to some degree. I think being an active runner yourself helps lend some credibility to what you are telling your athletes. Any other nominations for who is the fastest?

@JAXC For a guy who has probably reached 50 by now, Doug Hugill runs very well--or at least did a few years ago. I don't recall seeing really recent results for him. Kenny Wilcox at Salida is faster than I gave him credit for until I ran a race (of sorts) with him. Matt Norton definitely still has wheels. I'd bet Erik Stevens can roll. I know Randy Scherer (new coach at Sky View Academy) can pick 'em up and put 'em down because he was my assistant coach until this year. Tommy Manning is a national level trail runner. Lots of really fast guys out there and I'm sure I'm missing several. If you count assistant coaches...

@CoachVersaw I noticed that Matt Norton's name was not on this list. He ran a pretty fast time (not sure exactly) at the 2010 Great Southwest XC meet.

@Djoiner He's on the list. Your eyes may have jumped over his name on the first pass. As you said, he's definitely still got some wheels.

I've trained pretty hard in the past year to do two things: 1. Finish the 3200 Eliminator at the St Vrain Invitational; you can't imagine how much trash was talked between me and my boys the year previous since I'd pulled out at the halfway point in 2010. Mission accomplished. 2. Get after Coach Callor in AZ this year; I could have sworn I'd get him when I caught up to him in the last mile, but he's got sneaky finishing speed. I'll be ready this year, though.;-)

@mnort I think I might train hard again after our baby is born. I think I am ready to come out of retirement(lol!), so maybe we can do some races or runs together?

Those Dakota Ridge coaches, Mike and Mark, can really move. As soon as our daily meetings are over the throwers amble to our area and BAM those distance kids are g-o-n-e! Nicest guys you could meet as well.

I second (and thirds maybe by now) Coach Norton. I race him every year at the Loveland Turkey Trot and he throws down! I always see him at the start and get goose bumps...he looks fit and fast at Thanksgiving! Joe Howdyshell, a volunteer assistant at Summit High (and a Nordic Coach) is pretty blazing. He has won every short course so far this summer at the Summit Trail Running Series. How about the women in our world?

Tommy Manning (Fountain Valley HS) finished second in the Pikes Peak Ascent on Saturday in 2:15.43. That is an exceptional time. I'm pretty sure there aren't any coaches in Colorado faster over 13.33 miles with 8000 feet of elevation gain and lots of marginal footing. I believe the Philip G. Meyer who finished in 2:51 is a runner for Cheyenne Mountain. Sean O'Day, 2:56, is a Cheyenne Mountain assistant coach. Joshua Grubb, 3:09, is the new coach at Falcon Mike Schoudel, 3:15, is an assistant at Salida I didn't see any others of immediate relevance to the topic at hand, but it's entirely possible I missed some. Here is the complete set of Pikes Peak Ascent results: http://www.pikespeakmarathon.org/race_results/2011_pikes_peak_ascent.htm

Talking about women I believe that Ruby Bode is one of the fastest coaches in Colorado. She broke the Estes Park Marathon record and she works out with the team everyday. She is amazing!!!! ~K

@LasotaEP Made me tired at the meet today just watching her. Great job by Estes Park today, by the way. Anxious to see the official results to see exactly where you all came out.

My vote goes to Kelly Christiansen, assistant coach for University. He was a 3 time all American in Cross Country and a national champion in the steeple for Western State. I believe that his 5000 time was sub 14:00.

@danbetz I'll second that; he ran with me on the Wild West Relay this summer and let me tell you, he's still a monster.

Cheyenne Mountain's coach Karen Scott has thrown down an 8 hour 22 min 100k and has clocked 17:47 hours for 100 miles. Cheyenne Mountain's coach Sean O'Day won this years Pikes Peak Ascent Double.

Are we talking about "is" or "was" the fastest runner??? Two VERY different distinctions. If "was", then consider the following: Loveland's Tim Jones has clocked a 2:16 Marathon. Rocky Mountain's John Prasuhn ran sub 16:00 as a Master. Poudre's Craig Moyer ran sub 16:00 I believe. Alan Lind was once (80's) pretty darned fast. Greeley West's assistant Natalie Peterson has run 16:43 for 5000M

I think it is time we settled this... 5000 Meters. Saturday, December 10th (The Weekend After NXN Nationals to reduce excuses) Qualifications: Must have been a paid XC coach in the 2011 season having passed the CHSAA exam Scoring: Individual titles for: Fastest overall male and female Fastest Masters male and female (40+) Fastest Grand-Masters male and female (60+) I will personally donate some sort of "Trophy" Team Title: Run unlimited, score 2 (There will only be one race.) Location: TBA (Any volunteers to host?) Someone kick me if this is the stupidest idea ever. I think this might be awesome.

@JAXC Lyons would be happy to offer our course for the race. And hopefully I can convince a couple of assistant coaches to throw their hats in the ring.
