Cole Nash took a peek over his left shoulder, but there wasn't anyone there. When his eyes saw no challenging shadows, he reset his gaze forward.
Nearly forty minutes later the scene would play out in identical motions, though it was Ella Johns taking the peek.
No shadows.
Aside from the peek, the Chatfield senior and the Fort Collins freshman shared one thing in common at the Thornton Invitational Friday afternoon: sheer domination.
Nash blitzed the field with a 15:38 victory to defend his Thornton Invite title, which, ironically enough, he ran the same exact time a year ago, while Johns took a 22-second victory, running 18:28 for her second big win of the season.
Domination was the theme in Thornton, as both individual races were runaway affairs, like the team competition.
