Niwot Cleans Up At A Scorching Boulder County Championships


On the boy's side of the competition Gavin Schurr ran true to form in the 100. The Fairview senior ran away with nearly a half-second victory, clocking a meet record of 10.61

Schurr started the 200, but pulled up after about 20 meters. This left the remaining 180 meters up for grabs. Skylilne's Andrew Muncy took full advantage, running a 4A No. 3 of 22.19. The victory was Muncy's second of the day - he also won the 400 in a 4A No. 1 of 48.59.

The mid-distance events were quite explosive. 


Zane Bergen succeeded in claiming the double - winning the 800 and 1,600. The Niwot junior and 4A state cross country champ won the 800 in 1:54.29 - just off the meet record - under the blazing  afternoon sun. A few hours earlier he dropped a 60-second final lap to win the 1,600 in a meet record and 4A No. 1 of 4:13.58. 

Niwot swept the of the top-three spots in the eveent. Grayden Rauba and Simon Saia finished 2-3, running 4:16.48 and 4:16.96 - 4A No. 2 and No. 3 marks.

Heat side, Saia won the 3,200 in 9:27.20. 

Off the track Eddie Kurjak starred. 

The Longmont senior tied his PR in the high jump, leaping to a meet and stadium record of 6-11. Kurjack also won the triple jump in a 4A No. 1 of 46-5.75. 

Meanwhile Fairview went 1-2 in the pole vault. Leo Sundstrom and Will Chiang both cleared 14-3.

Like the girl's team race, the Niwot boys dominated. They tallied 172 points to make it a Niwot sweep of the Boulder County Track Championships. Longmont took second with 80 points, while Fairview as a close third with 78. Erie was just six points back with 72.
