The Colorado State T&F Championships 5A Preview

Can Denver East sweep the sprints?

Between Michelle McDonald and Kyairra Reigh, it's possible.

McDonald heads to Jeffco with the fastest time in the 100, while Reigh owns state-bests in the 200, and the 400. McDonald and Reigh will have to battle with Valor Christian's Camille Peisner, however.

McDonald has run 12.08 in the 100 to Peisner's 12.11, while Reigh has run 24.15 to Peisner's 24.17. In the 400 Reigh owns the fastest time by a second - her 54.01 leads the state. Peisner has run 55.06.

Riley Stewart will highlight in the distance events - she'll endure one of the more challenging triples - the 800, 1600, and the 3,200.

The 1,600 state record holder recently dropped an eye-opening 2:08.22 PR in the 800, and just a few weeks ago she ran the fastest 1,600 ever on Colorado soil.

Cameron McConnell and Maelynn Higgins look to be the only runners within sight of Stewart in the 800, having run 2:11.05, and 2:11.06. Meanwhile Stewart is a whole 10-seconds ahed of the field in the 1,600.

While Stewart looks dominate in the mid-distance events, the 3,200 could be an exciting battle between Emma StutzmanTaylor Whitfield, and Stewart. The last time Stutzman and Whitfield met, Stutzman took the win in 10:51.46, which was just ahead of Whitfield's 10:51.84. Stewart has run 10:52 so far this season.

The battle for the 3,200 is scheduled for 8:20 Friday morning.

Unfortunately, the 100H will be missing the fastest hurdler in the state - Zeaniah Wedgeworth is not entered in the event. What looked to be a hotly contested between Wedgeworth and the second-fastest hurdler in the state - Fabiola Belibi now looks like it leans heavily in favor of the Regis Jesuit junior.

Belibi will battle with Kylie Bahr in the 300H.

On the other side of the spectrum, Belibi is a clear favorite in the long jump - her recent PR of 19-7.5 tops the rankings by over a foot.

Likewise, Brooke Naughton enters the high jump competition with a four-inch advantage.

The triple jump is another event to keep an eye on - Melody Nwagwu has gone over 40-feet this year, and heads to Jeffco as the favorite with her 40-7 PR.

Lilly Nichols will look to capture her first state title, in her first state meet. The Broomfield freshman is the favorite to claim the pole vault - she recently cleared a CO No. 1 of 13-3.5 in the event.

In the discus Kajsa Borrman is the favorite - she tops the rankings by over 10-feet in the event, while Laura Davis will battle with Amanda Opp and Borrman for the shot put title.

On paper the defending state champs - Valor Christian - look like big favorites. The question looks like who will get second Cherry Creek and Grandview could battle into the 4x4s...
