The Colorado State T&F Championships 5A Preview

In the sprints Gavin Schurr will race history, though he'll have company in Sterling Brassfield, and Lawrence Walker

Schurr owns a 5A No. 1 in the 100 of 10.49, though he has run 10.36 out-of-state. Brassfield is the second-fastest in the 100 field, having run 10.58.

In the 200 Walker owns the fastest-time run in Colorado at 21.30, though it's of note that Schurr has run 20.52 out-of-state (a US No. 3.)

Keep an eye on the clock off the 200 final - Jeremy Dodson's 20.70 state record could be challenged.

The 200 final is scheduled to run Saturday at 1:22 p.m.

On paper, Schurr heads to Jeffco as the favorite, though Brassfield and Walker have been racing really well as of late.

Editor's Note: Schurr will be competing in the first round of the 200 at the Olympic Trials Friday

The 800 will feature the current 800 state record holderHarrison Witt, and the No. 2 800 runner William Merrick

The last time these two met Witt ran the fastest time in Colorado history, running 1:48.50, and Merrick was second in 1:50.74. Witt will likely be looking for the double (he's running the 1,600 as well), while Merrick will eye the 400 (against Ky Oday Jr). On paper these two look to be in their own race.

And then there's the one event nearly everyone will want to watch - the 1,600.

Two of the fastest Colorado 1,600 runners in history will toe the same line at the same time. The 5A 1,600 is scheduled to run at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Can't make it to Jeffco? Watch it Live

Witt and Parker Wolfe are the only two Coloradans to break 4:10 in Colorado. And they're the only two break 4:07. By now the story of how Wolfe ran 4:06.17 to break the record one week only to have Witt run 4:05.18 the following week is pretty well known.

What makes this even more The Event To Watch is that two of Colorado's fastest distance runners will meet in the middle - Witt owns the 800 state record (and the 1,600), while Wolfe owns the 3,200, and the 5k.

While most eyes will be on Witt and Wolfe, you can't count of Ben Conlin - the surprise runner-up from the 2020 State Cross Country meet.

The strategy of how this race is run will likely play a huge factor in the outcome...

Like Witt, Wolfe will likely be eyeing a double. As the state record holder in the 3,200, and one of two to break nine-minutes on Colorado soil in history, he is the favorite in the event. He'll likely have Caleb Boutelle and Conlin to battle over the eight laps. Boutelle ran a Colorado personal best of 9:04.99 several weeks ago, so we know he's knocking on that Sub-9 (Colorado) door.

The 110 Hurdles look like a tight race. Carsen BrunsMalique Singleton, and Gregory Anderson have all run within four-hundredths of a second of each other this season.

Likewise, the 300H looks like a three-man race between Michael BennettDominic Gallelli, and Bruns.

Brandon Hills has leapt well over a foot beyond anyone in the long jump - his 23-9.75 is in a league of its own right now.

The question in the throws is: Can Braiden Dishman sweep? The Fossil Ridge senior heads to Jeffco as the favorite in the discus, and the shot put. He'll have Tanner Arkin to battle in both events.

What of the overall team title?

On paper, Grandview looks like the team to beat. Their relays could pick up some big points. Cherry Creek looks like a legit threat, however. It could come down to the final event of the final day - the 4x400...
