The dust has finally settled on the first week of Colorado's 2022 outdoor track & field season!
(And the second week launches off the starting line today...)
While winter had another go halfway through the week, stopping a few meets before they could even get on the line, there was still plenty of action.
Let's get into it, here are the highlights of the highlights...
The Centennial League Opener saw some eyebrow-raising performances.
In the girls 1,600 it was The Addisons' verses The Avas', with Cherry Creek's Addison Price and Addison Laughlin going 1-2, running 5:11.20, and 5:11.25. Ava Escorcia and Ava Mitchell finished 3-4, running 5:13.85, and 5:15.27. Doubling up in distance Emily Lamontagne ran away with the 3,200, running 11:04.
In the field events we caught a glimpse of the future - Cherokee Trail freshman Sky Thompson won the long jump in 18-9.25. That's the fourth-best in the country among freshmen. Blythe Cayko and Savannah Jorgens took the shot put down to the inches with Cayko winning the event in 36-5 to Jorgens' 36-0.
Meanwhile Grandview went 1-2 in the 200, with Evan Johnson winning the event in 22.34, which was just ahead of teammate David Maldonado's 22.63.
In the field events NiiAmon Levias Kotey won the long jump in a wind-aided 22-3.5, while Mateo Munoz won pole vault with a 14-0 clearance.
Defending 1,600 state champion Bethany Michalak opened up her outdoor season at the Palmer Terror Invitational. The Air Academy sophomore won the 800 in 2:16.30, while teammate Tessa Walter won the 1,600 in 5:15.14. A highlight on the boys side was Widefield's Dallen Booker, who won the 200 in 22.42.
Wind didn't slow down much of competition at the Coyote/Panther Invite.
Big highlights came from Prospect Ridge Academy's Avery Marr, who won the 800 in 2:18.60, Centaurus' Maggie McCleskey, who won the 1,600 in 5:19.71, and Isabel Allori, who won the 3,200 in 11:11. For the boys Grayson Arnold (pictured above) starred with a 22.77 head-wind victory in the 200.

Meanwhile the CSU-Pueblo Early-Bird saw some impressive performances in the field events. Isabella Coscetti won the pole vault in 11-0, while Lamar went 1-2 in shot put. Alexandria Tice won the shot put with a toss of 39-4.25. Teammate Lauren Reyes was second in 36-8.75. For the boys Lawrence Walker won the 200 in 22.29.
Another big highlight came from the Cheyenne Mountain boy's 4x800, who dropped a US No. 7 of 8:00.74.
Niwot starred at the St. Vrain RE-1J District Meet.
4A state cross country champion Eva Klingbeil clocked Colorado's first sub-5 1,600 of the 2022 season, winning the event in 4:56.39. Kimora Northrup swept the hurdles, winning the 100H in 14.82, and the 300H in 44.56
The The Banana Belt Classic also had some stellar performances in the field events. For the girls, defending 3A state champion Anna Willis won the pole vault with a clearance of 12-4. For the boys, Brandon Hills won the long jump with a 22-8 leap, while Alec Falk won the discus with a throw of 161-0.
On the Western Slope Tristian Spence was the main highlight at the Fruita Monument Early Bird Meet. The Central (GJ) season won the 3,200 in 11:06.
At the PIEDRA VISTA TURNER RELAYS in New Mexico Durango's William Knight won the discus with a toss of 155-11.
Colorado had a few stars head to the Big Apple for the New Balance Nationals Indoor, and Nike Indoor Nationals.
Editor's Note: Bare with us -- results from these meets are still be loaded, and will take some time to filter into our system...
Among the highlights..
For the full mile - Niwot's Zane Bergen flirted with a sub-4 mile, running 4:02.64 to finish second, while Cherry Creek's Riley Stewart finished third 4:40.93.
Meanwhile Kourtney Rathke and Megan Kelleghan went 3-4 in the pole vault, with both clearing 13-3.
Cherry Creek's Kinsey Christianson had a huge weekend of her own - she won the Rising Stars 800 in 2:10.47, and finished second in the Rising Stars 400 in 56.49.
Across town at the Nike Indoor Nationals Northfield senior Giavonna Meeks claimed the Weight Throws national title with a toss of 57-03.50, and finished second in the shot put in 46-6.25.
Bring on the second week of the outdoor track season!
