Finally.
A recap where I get to write the words: There were a ton of great performances across the state.
Literally.
On that note, you might need a few cups of coffee to get through this recap - it's probably the longest one I've written yet...
The first week of the season was revealing. Usually it takes a few weeks to see a handful of big performances, but no. The first week was pretty nuts.
We waited for what felt like forever for the 2021 outdoor track & field season to start, and now that it has, it's obvious in the results that everyone had a ton of pent-up energy to release.
Here are the highlights of the highlights...
Did anyone hear that the 41 year-old 1,600 Colorado state record went down this past Saturday?
It's official - Parker Wolfe ran 4:06.17 at the Centennial League Qualifier #1 B to take down the late Rich Martinez's previous record of 4:10.98. That means Wolfe now owns Colorado records in the 1,600, and the 5k.
More on his record here: Parker Wolfe Runs 4:06.17 1,600 Colorado Record
Riley Stewart put together an impressive double herself. The Cherry Creek junior won the 1,600 in 4:54.38, and the 3,200 in 10:52.
Another big result from the meet came from Overland's Zeaniah Wedgeworth, who won the 100 Hurdles just off her personal best in 14.76.
Meanwhile, Durango's Paul Knight and Damian Frausto headed further west to Provo, UT for the BYU High School Invitational, where both left with two PRs a piece. Frausto led the duo in the 1,600, running 4:27.91, while Knight's was less than a stride back in 4:27.93. Knight led his teammate in the 3,200, running 9:29, while Frausto ran 9:42.
Back in Colorado it was a Brandon Hills kind of day at the CSU-Pueblo Early-Bird. The Vista Ridge sophomore won the 100 in 11.04, the 200 in 22.69, the long jump in 21-9.5, and the triple jump in 44-3.
Did I mention all of those were PRs?
Meanwhile, Pueblo East's Xavier Freeman won the shot put in a big PR of 51-9, while Pueblo West's Wyatt Pruce won the discus in 150-8.
For the girl's Isabella Coscetti was the main highlight in the pole vault, winning the event in 11-6.

And speaking of the girl's pole vault...
We've got an exciting four years ahead of us. Another big highlight out of the first week of competition was this event.
On Tuesday Broomfield freshman Lilly Nichols soared over 12-6 to win the event at the Lafayette Season Opener, and she nearly had 13-2 on a few attempts.
On Saturday The Classical Academy freshman Anna Willis cleared 13-0 at the R2J Invitational. On the same day Nichols added another inch, winning the pole vault in 12-7 at the B-Town Opener.
Currently the top-three pole vaulters in the state are freshmen. Add that Willis, Nichols, and Kourtney Rathke are the top-three freshmen in the country in the event. (Rathke cleared 12-1.75 last month.)
Meanwhile, the Erie Tiger Invite was a hotly contested competition.
On the note of the pole vault, Silver Creek sophomore Megan Kelleghan joined the 12-foot club. She won the event in 12-0.
Niwot was all over the place, per the usual. Madison Shults won the 800 in 2:16.77, while Lucca Fulkerson ran a state-leading 10:50 to win the 3,200. Teammate Mia Prok was second in 11:04. Kimora Northrup continued to dominate, winning the 300 hurdles in 44.31.
On the boy's side of the competition Zane Bergen and Ryan Montera took the 3,200 down to the line. The 4A state cross country champ took the win here, running 9:24.84, which was just ahed of Montera's 9:25.33.
Off the track Eddie Kurjak was the name. The Longmont senior won the high jump in a state-leading 6-9, and he won the triple jump with a 45-4.25 leap.
Out west 3A state cross country champ Katelyn Maley went down in distance at the Rifle High School Invitational. Maley won the 800 in 2:19.33. Meanwhile, Coal Ridge's Marin Simons won the high jump in a PR of 5-4 - that's a Colorado No. 1 in the event.
Moving along...
In addition to Willis' big 13-0 clearance at the R2J Invitational, there were a trio of Sub-23 clockings in the boy's 200. Drew Morton, Bennett Feldenkirchen ,and Braylon Fenderson finished within two-tenths of each other, with Morton taking the event in 22.41. Feldenkirchen was second in 22.46, while Fenderson was third in 22.61. Jackson Shorten showed some legit early fitness in the 1,600. The Mountain View senior ran the fastest time in 4A, winning the event in 4:22.83.
Off the track Becker Ell soared to a Colorado No. 1 in the pole vault. The Thompson Valley senior cleared 14-8 to win the event. For the girls Kajsa Borrman tossed her shot put into the top-10 state rankings, winning the event in 37-1.5.
On Tuesday at the Lafayette Season Opener Taylor James came out of the blocks on fire. The. Niwot senior won the 200 in 25.39, and the 400 in 57.13, which was just ahead of teammate Kimora Northrup's 57.69, and Madison Shults' 57.92.

These two went back at it at the Fort Morgan Invitational a few days later. Schoenthal won the discus there in 156-10, while Ibrahim was second again, this time in 153-7.
Ibrahim did get a W before the week was over, however - he won the shot in 52-3.75, while Schoenthal was second in 52-0.5.
4A state cross country champion Bethany Michalak opened her 2021 track season at the Palmer Terror Invitational. The Air Academy freshman won the 1,600 in 5:15.
On the boy's side of the competition Sam Weisstein won the 200 in 22.53, while Thomas Fry dipped under 50 seconds to win the 400 in 49.77.

In the 300H Kylie Bahr was the runaway winner, crossing the line in 44.77, while off the track Megan Lonneman won the long jump in 18-4.5.
In the throws the name was Giavonna Meeks. The Northfield junior won the discus in 151-0, and the shot in 47-3. Both are state-leading marks.
On the boy's side of the competition recent transfer Drew Costelow won the 800 in 1:56.44, while Grahm Tuohy-Gaydos put up an impressive double, winning the 1,600 in 4:26.62, and the the 3,200 in 9:21. Caleb Boutelle was second in 9:26.
