Colorado State Preview: Athletes To Watch In All Classes

4A

The greatest triple jumper in Colorado's history will have one more go at Jeffco, and that's Mullen senior Agur Dwol

Dwol very recently broke her own state record, leaping to US No. 1 of 41-11.75, and a leapt beyond 20-feet for the first time - landing at 20-0.5. It's safe to say that she's rounding into peak shape right in time for State. The only question is: How far will the defending state champ jump?

Likewise, Giavonna Meeks has dominated the throws over the past two years, and she heads to Jeffco as a favorite to claim the discus and the shot put. Her 165-0 discus currently leads the entire state by over 30-feet.

A year ago Silver Creek's Megan Kalleghan saved her best pole vault performance for last, and it was memorable - a 13-4 clearance. She heads to Jeffco with a season-best of 12-9, and looks to be in prime position to defend her state title.

In the distance events Niwot's Eva Klingbeil appears to be the favorite. The state cross country champions has run 4:54 in the 1,600, and an even more impressive 10:15 3,200 - in Colorado. You can never count out Air Academy's Bethany Michalak - she is the defending state champion in the 1,600, and she's run 10:36 in the 3,200 this season.

Meanwhile, there are two questions about the 800: Who from Niwot will win this event? And can anyone break into their top-six? Literally - the top-six seeds in the 800 are all from Niwot, and they've all run 2:15 or faster. Stella Vieth owns the top-seed with  her 2:11.10 clocking, though she'll likely have teammate and defending state champ Madison Shults to battle down the final strides with, as she's run 2:11.74.

Vieth is also the top-seed in the 400.

A year ago Air Academy's Simeon Whitaker finished ninth in the 100 finals, and he didn't qualify for state in the 200. This year he's the favorite to claim both events - he's run 10.82 in the 100, and 21.98 in the 200.

And speaking of a year ago, Zane Bergen swept the distance events in dominating fashion. He heads to Jeffco as the favorite in the 800, and the 1,600, though he'll have a challenger in Erik Le Roux in the 3,200 - Le Roux owns the fastest time run in the state this year with a 9:10 clocking.

The pole vault looks to be high-flying affair, as Riverdale Ridge's Lucas Couron has cleared 15-8 this season.

The triple jump will see three of the best in the event go head-to-head, as Grand Junction's Miller Jones owns the No. 1 triple jump mark in the all-classifications with his 46-10.5. Longmont's Caleb Johnson and Roosevelt's Tucker Peterson have also leapt beyond 46-feet this season.

Meanwhile Palmer Ridge's Alec Falk will look to dominate the discus - his 182-9 leads 4A by nearly 20-feet.
