Monday Morning Recap: More Records Fall In The Second Week

Maelynn Higgins ran a 5A state-leading 2:12.70 800 at the Broomfield Shootout.

For the second consecutive week a state record fell - two in fact.

That's already strange enough.

Add that this past weekend was when the Colorado state track and field championships typically take place.

Coincidence?

Scanning the results of the second week of the outdoor season, it's crazy to say that the first week must have been the warm-up.

Let's get to it... Here are the highlights of the highlights.

If you haven't heard yet - there are two new Colorado state records this week. Saturday morning Parker Wolfe  officially added the 3,200 state record to his resume, running 8:55.94. For a few hours Wolfe held the 1,600, 3,200, and 5k Colorado state records.

Cue: Harrison Witt

Across town Witt went beast-mode on his own and lowered Wolfe's one week-old 1,600 record down to 4:05.18.

What's additionally mind-bogging, is that up until last week the 1,600 record was 40 years-old, and no Coloradan had broken 4:10 in the state. Over the past decade nine had run between 4:11 and 4:12. Eight days later two have broken 4:07. That's not exactly chipping away at a record, it's truly breaking it.

The dam has broken.

In Colorado Springs Harrison Panther Invite played host to quite a few reveals.

Teammates Mikayla Hutchison and Jaysa Even gave 2A to reason to look at Banning Lewis Preparatory as a serious threat in the team race. Hutchinson won the 100 in 12.69, and finished second in the 200 in 26.51. Even took second in the high jump at 5-1 and a fourth in the 100 hurdles at 17.19. Meanwhile Bethany Michalak dropped a big personal best in the 800, winning the event in 2:14.31. And speaking of big PRs, off the track Olivia Allison won the high jump in 17-8.5 - that's about four-feet beyond her previous best.

On the boy's side of the competition Derek Allen and Lawrence Walker took the 200 down the the inches. And by inches, I mean that the two were separated by one-hundredth of a second. Allen to the win here, running 22.65 to Walker's 22.66. Meanwhile Erik Le Roux ran away with the 1,600, running 4:26 to claim the event. Off the track Brandon Hills leapt over 23-feet in the long jump for a new Colorado No. 1 of 23-1.75.

Further up in distance Elliot Pribramsky ran away with the 3,200, running 11:11. In the sprints  Skylar Hawk had a big day. The Holy Family junior won the 100 in 12.73, the 200 in 25.76, and the 300H in 45.58. Off the track Lilly Nichols continued to soar - the Broomfield freshman won the pole vault in 12-2, while Amanda Opp won the shot put in 37-11.25.

On the boy's side of the competition Lukas Haug and Caden Smith made the final 100 of the 800 exciting. Haug kicked late to win the event in 1:56.13, just ahead of Smith's 1:56.63. Doubling up in distance Ryan Montera away with the W in the 1,600, running a PR of 4:15.00. Ben Conlin kicked late to finish second in 4:15.95. Meanwhile Carsen Bruns swept n the hurdles. The Rampart junior won the 110 Hurdles in14.45, and the 300 Hurdles in a state-leading 38.18. Off the track Eddie Kurjak was a big highlight, and I'm talk referring to his height. The Longmont senior cleared 6-11 in the high jump for a Colorado No.1, and a US No. 8 mark. Additionally, he won the long jump in 22-3.5.

Nolan Johnson the big highlight at the City of Greeley Championships. The University senior won the long jump in 22-2.5.

The big story coming out of the Centennial League Qualifier #2 was Wolfe's state record in the 3,200, though it wasn't the only notable performance. Kaleah Ruff ran a wind-aided 25.23 to win the 200, and Agur Dwol went 38-0 in the triple jump. For the boys Sterling Brassfield was a double-winner, claiming the 100 in a wind-aided 10.63, and the 200 in 22.38.

While there was enough going on in the state Colorado, Gavin Schurr dropped his fastest 200 to date, running 20.52 at BYU in Utah. The time is under Jeremy Dodson's 20.70 state record, but it was run out-of state, so it won't show in the CHSAA rankings.
